I would say aeration, heavy over-seed, new top dressing, starter fertilizer and water in the fall. It should crowd out a lot of the weeds. Next year mow higher as well. That again should prevent weed growth.

  2. Option 1: is plan to completely reinstall a new lawn in fall

Option 2 is to try to get the weeds managed over the next month, and then do a renovation in late summer or early fall; beat the crap out of it with an aerator then topdress+overseed

If this ain’t a nuke and regrow I don’t know what is.

The key to a good lawn is to be proactive. At this point there’s not much you can do. It’s like watering after your lawn is brown. Too late. You need to not let it get brown.

    Get weed/grass killer
Kill everything there, then get grass seed and fertilizer

  6. ryguy2018

Kill it all, add top soil and till it into the existing soil, plant seed, fertilize and water six times a day to germinates the seeds

Beautiful layout man! You can do what ever you want!
I would take ur time and do it right from the begging. Tiller, mix in top soil, do a sprinkler system, seed, and just stay on top of it!
Good luck, trial and error error best way to learn

One thing I have not seen in the comments: test your soil. You may need to amend it and fix things like pH. Often weeds are better suited for acidic soils and no matter how much you try to plat grass the weeds take over. It looks too compacted, so aeration, but also check your soil composition (too much clay could be a problem). What to do depends on budget, time and expectations.

Till it like it owes you money and start again. Sod would be easiest but seed can work as well.

    1. Wait till it starts to be cooling off in the fall.

2.As others have said, burn it down, till it up, add compost and top soil, fertilizer, and heavy oversees.

If you can, add some bio char.

Go crazy with herbicide like tenacity like in end of July and you need to aplky it 2 or 3 times (when you see new weeds coming up), mid Aug/early Sept go crazy with an over seed and started fertilizer, and keep on watering after that…3/4 weeks after ocerseed you will see a huge differentts in your lawn

  12. Top_of_the_world718

Kill everything. Aerate and reseed entirely

TBH I would take advantage of this situation. The parts that are dirt/weed. Eventually turn those spots into just dirt, and cover with sand or chips and create some sort of landscape design.

I’m with the nuke it and start over guys. B you don’t really have much of a lawn there. Just bare dirt and weeds. This needs a bunch of work. Don’t bother starting now. You’ll have to wait till early fall.

  15. Its probably too late in the season now to regrow and its gonna be a hot summer.

Weeds love barren soil where there’s nothing growing.

I’d prepare it for September fall season and start strong next spring.

  16. Taskmaster_Fantatic

Start now. Nuke it all. You’re going to have a dirt lawn for the next few months.

    Nuke and then nuke again.

If possible, till the soil and then add topsoil and sand.

Level to the best of your ability.

In the fall, (this depends on what grass you want and where you live) overseed with a tall fescue grass and then lay sod over it all. Water 3x daily for 2 weeks. And then 3 times weekly after that.

Enjoy your beautiful new lawn for years to come with light maintenance, aeration and overseeding.

Are those broken sea shells in the lower right corner of the first page?

  18. Are weeds not making this scene better? Certainly the green to brown ratio will go down with weed killing.

  19. d33pfissure

Scalp it. Re-sod, reseed, and/or Scott’s turf builder (weed n feed).

  20. Puzzleheaded_Pipe979

Sounds like the perfect excuse to buy a propane torch.

  21. Prestigious-Green-19

Start over and take care of your lawn all year round not just when it gets this bad

  22. ryamanalinda

I dunno but for second I thought I was looking at shot of the Brady house across the street

  23. Possible-Half-1020

I mean you aren’t maintaining your lawn at all so the the balance has been tipped to fully benefit the weeds so you can start by proper watering, fertilizing, aerating, re seeding, etc. to re tip the balance towards benefiting your lawn.

  24. SlippinYimmyMcGill

Rototiller in the fall, and plant some grass.

  25. Capable-Mongoose4635

When people say nuke it? Do they mean to actually burn the grass off?

  26. not-an-isomorphism

So my back yard looked somewhat like this except it was filled with rocks. I spent several weeks raking rocks, tilled it 3 times til it was completely smooth dirt and reseeded. It looks great now, it was hard though.

  27. 3_Times_Dope

I don’t usually recommend a nuke and re-seeding, but you are definitely in that situation. Glyphosate ALL that mess, and start from scratch ASAP this fall.
